Space and security
22 March 2010 - London, Salters' Hall
Event Overview
As the first forum on Space and Security held in February last year made abundantly clear, the development of UK space interests cannot be considered in isolation and the roles of the United States, of our partners in Europe, and of friends and rivals elsewhere have to be examined most carefully. This Round Table makes such an examination and assesses both the many vulnerabilities and the means by which the risks can be mitigated.
With space assets such key enablers and space services providing so many vital capabilities, this forum is essential. National security, defence, civil government and business could all face disaster if there were to be fractures in space.
The Shadow Security Minister, Baroness Neville-Jones, keynotes and the day includes contributions from the Cabinet Office, other government departments and agencies, from Europe, the ESA in particular, and the United States; with extended serious analysis of the position of Washington on space security policy led by Professor John Sheldon, the newly appointed Director of National Space Studies Center at the Air University, who played a substantial role in the Cityforum Round Table proceedings last year. The US Government has made space security a significant priority in the QDR that has just been published.
Space is recognised as an area of British industrial excellence and the implications, particularly for security, of the announcement of the new executive agency to lead on national space efforts is on the agenda for 22nd March. The IGT Report, now awaited, also has the potential to be very significant. Extending partnerships between the public and private sectors is vital in the period of financial stringency the UK has entered. The possibilities for business development in security related areas are examined at the Round Table which is supported by the UK industry bodies tasked with maximising the success of a dynamic and growing area of the economy.
