Policing a perplexed society – people, skills, training, transformation

The Government has established a Police Transformation Fund to respond to changing crimes and threats in England and Wales by investing in digitalisation, a diverse and flexible workforce and new capabilities.

This important round table has been designed to look at the approach of the Fund, as evidenced so far, and how it can best be utilised in the future. In this unprecedented period of change, real innovation and new approaches to working will be required, if transformational reform is to be achieved.

The agenda for the round table includes an examination of areas of risk, some of them not currently under the microscope from where the serious challenges to law and order are coming and seeks agreement on what must be done to build trust, develop a trained and skilled workforce and secure the quality and utility of data in order that policing is ‘fit for purpose’ and keeps the public safe.

The summit is being held in a period when political, economic and social risks are a growing challenge to the institutions and agencies responsible for the delivery of stability and confidence. The police are particularly exposed in the current climate of uncertainty and mistrust that is worrying politicians, public servants, expert analysts, the media and many citizens.

This policing event is a high level day of discussion and will be of interest to police, local and central government officials, criminal justice practitioners and private sector organisations seeking to work alongside the police and partner the service. The Transformation Fund will be large* and if used cleverly can make a major difference to the quality of policing. Without the capability and expertise of the private sector many of the more daunting problems will not be solved.

*£23 million has been awarded to fund projects that will promote transformation in policing.  The total funding available in 2016 to 2017 is £76.4 million, including £41.6 million which has already been allocated to enhancing armed policing, digital policing programmes, and specialist police capabilities.
