Vice Chief of the Defence Staff

After education at Charterhouse and Cambridge (Law), Granville-Chapman was commissioned into the Gunners in 1968 and served at regimental duty until 1973. A tour as an instructor at Sandhurst and a job in Military Operations in the MoD preceded Staff College. Tours post Staff College included being Military Assistant to the Commander 1^st (British) Corps, command of an independent anti-tank battery in Germany, membership of the Directing Staff at the Staff College and command of a Horse Artillery regiment in Germany. As a Colonel, following attendance at the first Higher Command and Staff Course, he became an Assistant Director in the Defence Policy Staff in London, having spent a short while beforehand, as CGS’s author, writing the first ever version of the British Military Doctrine. Command of an armoured brigade in Germany was followed by RCDS after which he was, for 8 months, Director of Army Staff Duties. He became Assistant Chief of the General Staff in 1994 and in 1997 was appointed to create the new Joint Services Command and Staff College, closing the former single Service Staff Colleges and negotiating the permanent location for the new Staff College at Shrivenham in the process. He returned to the Army Board as the Adjutant General in mid 2000 and as Commander-in-Chief Land in January 2003. He became Vice Chief of the Defence Staff in July 2005.
The Vice Chief deputizes for CDS when appropriate and, with the Second Permanent Secretary, runs Defence business, principally through the Central Staff.
