 Joan Ryan

Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office


Joan Ryan was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Home Office in May 2006.  She supports Liam Byrne, the Minister of State for Immigration, Citizenship and Nationality, and among other issues has specific responsibility for Identity Cards, Refugee Integration, e-Borders and extradition.


Joan was elected as the Member of Parliament for Enfield North in May 1997.
 Originally a teacher, and a local councillor, following her election as an MP Joan worked as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to Andrew Smith.  She became an Assistant Whip in 2002, and a Government Whip in 2003.  She has been a member of the Select Committee on Selection since 2001.
