Peter Ryan Adviser, International Olympic Committee Peter Ryan is the Group Consultant for Critical Infrastructure and Resilience for Hyder Consulting. He is also the security adviser to the International Olympic Committee and was the principal security advisor for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. He has recently been providing security advice for the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar and other national security projects in the Middle East. Prior to this appointment he was the Chief of Police (Commissioner) of New South Wales, Australia’s largest police force of 18,000 personnel. Based in Sydney, he was the overall commander for the security operation of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Mr. Ryan has extensive experience in intelligence, counter terrorist planning and operations in the United Kingdom where he served in a variety of posts as a Chief of Police, and as a senior officer in London and other British police forces. He has been responsible for the security of the British Royal Family, sensitive government establishments and North Sea Gas Rigs. In Australia he was a member of the national committee dealing with counter terrorism. He has experienced policing and security operations in a number of European countries, China, Taiwan, West Africa and the USA. Mr. Ryan has formally been the National Director of Police Training in the United Kingdom; the Chairman of the Interpol Training Committee, and the founding President of the Association of European Police Colleges. He is a graduate of the FBI National Executive Institute. He is the security expert advising the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He is a member of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and provides advice to the Beijing security authorities and acts as an auditor of the preparations. He has recently provided advice to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games and the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Mr. Ryan is a frequent speaker at international conferences on transport security, major event security and lectures at universities on security management of large venues transport, major public events; and on leadership, crisis and risk management to major corporations and executive seminars. In order to keep abreast of developments in counter terrorism and security operations at a high level, he frequently attends seminars and training programmes being held by national governments, the most recent ones being on the response to aircraft and cruise ship high jacking, weapons of mass destruction, suicide bombing and crisis management of major terrorist and civil disasters. He has a wide knowledge of security and communications technology used in large security operations, including the planning and operations of complex command and control centers (C4i). He also has a broad understanding and experience of Special Forces operations and the training required of all staff engaged in major public security operations and crisis and emergency management. |
