Tuesday 20 November 2012
St Ermin's Hotel, London SW1
| Overview |
The objective of this important Round Table, developed after consultation with the Office of Security and Counter-Terrorism (OSCT), the wider Home Office and the Defence Concepts and Doctrine Centre of the Defence Academy, is threefold: to look at key developments in science and technology that are likely to have a significant effect on British security and defence; examine national strategy in the light of such potential ‘game changers’; and to establish how to encourage the development of those products and services that would benefit the country and assist in the regeneration of the economy.
The quality of the research and development undertaken by the UK has been vitally important for success hitherto and this will continue to be the case. Indeed, the limited budgets now available make the need to prioritise objectives and focus on their delivery more important than ever. This Round Table will assess how the UK can best meet such requirements and use the available resources effectively. The strategy of other countries, not least the United States, in fostering innovation and in encouraging smaller specialist players will be covered during a day that emphasises how to spot and then commercialise promising developments. Foreign experience in developing and bringing to market defsec S&T will feature through the day and particular attention will be devoted to disruptive technologies. How far the UK can and needs to change its approach will be a focus of the discussion.
This event launches a new Cityforum defence and security science and technology workstream, which will be followed by a round table looking specifically at bluelight S&T in spring 2013 and a major international conference in association with DSEI in September 2013 on the eve of the London Exhibition. This will be a global forum covering how S&T will affect the armed, security and police services in the coming 10 years and beyond.
